‘Goa Development Group (GDG) Kickoff Meeting for the Goa – Economy & Society Seminar’

A kickoff meeting to initiate and form the ‘Goa Development Group’ which will aim towards a publication titled, ‘Goa Development Report’ (Vol1) which will aim to address ‘Issues in Goan Development’ that will contribute to better policy and public management in Goa. The kickoff meeting brought together key stakeholders, including government officials, business leaders, academics, and civil society representatives, to initiate discussions on sustainable economic growth, social equity, and community development in Goa. The kickoff meeting also set the stage for a series of seminars and activities that will foster a deeper understanding of the region’s unique development context and promote actionable strategies to enhance the well-being of its residents.

The CPPG organized the Kickoff Meeting in collaboration with the ICG, Dona Paula. The GDG is a group of all individuals – experts, professionals, practitioners and others with a deep interest in Goa, its people, its growth and development. The Centre had sent out personalized invitations to over 250 plus participants from various sectors. The meeting witnessed overwhelming participation from around 60 plus participants from diverse professions & sectors (academia, industry, activists, civil society, bureaucracy, other experts and practitioners) some of whom were also presenters for the thematic sessions. The 8 thematic sessions were on key issues and aspects in Goa’s economy & society – Land & related issues, Mining, Forests & land-use, People, Economy, Politics, Public Service Delivery and Agriculture – covering about 29 presentations in total.

Prof. Sebastian Morris

Prof. Sebastian Morris is Senior Professor and Chair of the Centre for Public Policy and Governance at the Goa Institute of Management. He retired from the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad after over 25 years of teaching, research and consultation. His principal interests are the Indian economy, infrastructure development and regulation, the public sector and governance, international trade and investments, macroeconomics, and small industry. His recent books have been: Macroeconomic Policy in India since the Global Financial Crisis – Trends, Policies and Challenges in Economic Revival Post COVID (Springer Nature, 2022); (ed.) The Difficulty of Being Gajendra Haldea – Reflections on His Life and Legacy (Bloomsbury, 2023) and (ed.) The India Infrastructure Report 2023 – Urban Planning and Development (Bloomsbury, 2023).

Prof. Kingshuk Sarkar

Prof. Kingshuk Sarkar is Associate Professor in the area of General Management and Public Policy Area at the Goa Institute of Management. He had earlier served as labour administrator for more than two decades with the Govt. of West Bengal. His interests include labour & industrial economics, development economics, business economics, labour administration and labour laws, plantation economics and labour, labour laws and labour administration, employment relations and informal labour. In the past, he has worked as a faculty at the V.V. Giri National Labour Institute, Noida specializing in labour laws and labour administration. He has also worked as Assistant Professor in the National Institute of Rural Development, Hyderabad, in connection with works related to BPL Census 2011.
